CarpentryCon Launches Next Week

We’re excited to have you joining us next week to launch CarpentryCon 2022! To ensure you get the most out of your participation, we wanted to share some important information with you.

All conference participants must abide by The Carpentries Code of Conduct. If you have not already, please familiarize yourself with it before joining your first session at the conference.
The full conference schedule is available on the Schedule page. There have been a few updates to the schedule over the past few weeks (some sessions removed and others rescheduled) so be sure you have the most up-to-date information on the date and time of all sessions you wish to attend.
We’ll be using two Slack channels in The Carpentries workspace to support CarpentryCon. #carpentrycon will be used for announcements, initiating discussions relevant to sessions, and asking general questions about the event. Technical issues should be directed to #carpentrycon-helpdesk. If you are not on Slack, you can email carpentrycon@carpentries.org with any questions.
If you are unable to attend a session but have a question for the presenter or session leads, please add those to the Etherpad of the appropriate session under “Questions for Presenters/Session Leads.” A link to each Etherpad is provided in the information for each session.
For anyone who asked for materials to be made available to them in advance, all session leads have been asked to upload materials to the Google folder CarpentryCon 2022 Session Materials.
There are several sessions that require separate registration for CarpentryCon because they have an attendance cap. These sessions are listed below along with the link for registering for them. You can read abstracts for these sessions on the schedule page.

We are excited to announce that registration is now open for CarpentryCon 2022: Expanding Data Frontiers happening 1-12 August! We look forward to welcoming you at the event. CarpentryCon is an exciting - and free! - way to connect with The Carpentries community and “level up” data science skills.

Accessibility

We emphasize hosting inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to participate and engage fully. Thanks to generous funding from The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and YOU - via our Accessibility Fund, we are able to offer support for conference attendees who require access to specific services to fully attend the event. Volunteer

We invite volunteers to support the event by serving in one or more of the following roles:

Lead facilitator: will open session, make relevant announcements, and support session leads by monitoring questions and comments from attendees
Zoom support: will assign hosts, create breakout rooms, mute participants, and provide technical support as needed
Communications: will help share information about the conference via social media and address questions coming from participants via our Slack channel

We’re sending out a reminder that we are currently accepting CarpentryCon session proposals. The deadline is in less than a week, 12 June 2022. We welcome sessions led in any language or time zone. There are a range of session types to choose from, and here are a few ideas from Alycia Crall, The Carpentries Director of Community:

Are you a yoga instructor? Propose a social event/informal meetup session to teach a class.
Limited by time? Propose a 5-minute lightning talk that you can pre-record before the event.
Pressing topic you would like to discuss with the community? Propose a breakout session.
Have a new skill you want to share? Propose a skill-up workshop.
Need support to develop a community resource? Propose a resource development sprint.
Want to to hear from diverse perspectives on a topic? Propose a panel session.

How are you Expanding Data Frontiers?

This year’s theme for CarpentryCon is all-encompassing: we invite proposals for presentations that seek to expand data frontiers. Sub-themes will be compiled based on the submissions received, and proposal submission is open until 12 June. You can propose various session types, including breakout discussions, lesson and resource development sprints, lightning talks, panel sessions, skill-up workshops, _social events, and informal meetups.

Are you wondering if your research falls under the conference theme and if you should submit a proposal? The answer is probably a YES!

Defining the Theme

We looked to Merriam-Webster for a starting point for the theme elements:

Expanding

To open up, to expand, to increase the extent, number, volume, scope.

Data

Factual information used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, and calculation, digital information that can be transmitted or processed, information output.

Frontiers

The farthermost limits of knowledge, new fields for activity.

Thinking Creatively

We’d love it if you think creatively about expanding data frontiers. Here are some questions and ideas that we considered while elaborating the theme:

Pushing past the limits to expand the frontiers of data:
- What are those limitations? What might be a barrier, roadblock?
- How are you dismantling and/or moving past them?
Conversations and debates in the field:
- Tools, trends, and debates within computer science, data science, and other relevant fields.
- Expanding the information, knowledge, and conversation within and beyond The Carpentries community.
Building collective knowledge through lessons learned teaching workshops, developing lessons, and receiving learner feedback:
- Share a failure or success story:
  - What did you learn? Key takeaways?
  - How do you move forward? Next steps?
Current and Trending Topics: current and new research, ideas, methodologies, solutions, and next steps in areas including, but not limited to, the following:
- Community - expanding reach, communities of practice, networking, etc
- Computing - capacity and capability, tools, approaches, and resources, etc
- Data Democracy - confronting misinformation, open and transparent, approachable to general public, outcomes, etc
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - data literacy curriculum, women in data, diverse perspectives, user accessibility, etc.
- Data security
- Data ethics
- Evaluation - data use policies, procedures, practices, etc.
- Literacy - pedagogy, curriculum, tools, tips and tricks, evaluation, adding new skills and languages, audience, etc.

CarpentryCon Proposal Submission is Now Open!

CarpentryCon is one of the most anticipated events of The Carpentries for community-building and networking. The theme for CarpentryCon 2022, Expanding Data Frontiers, will offer opportunities for the community to explore topics that will expand their knowledge and understanding of all things Carpentries. This two-week event, happening 1–12 August, brings together new and experienced community members to network, share knowledge, develop new skills, and exchange strategies for building communities of practice. The conference will be held virtually and structured to accommodate sessions across multiple time zones. Come and help develop our future leaders through practical skill-ups, networking, workshops, and breakout sessions.

We invite you to submit proposals to share your knowledge and skills to help enhance research and learning outcomes for our community. You will also support expanding data and computational skills for librarians, scholars, scientists, and technologists from various domains. We welcome topics that align with the theme such as:

Diversity in coding
Women in artificial intelligence
State of the open source movement
Data care skills for equity
Outreach and awareness of Carpentries outside our community
Data and information literacy in the age of misinformation
Communities and FAIR
Data inclusivity and diversity
Accessible data for all

Members of the community, through our Community Discussions, have also provided the following list of sessions of interest:

Encouraging success stories from workshop attendees, including specific use cases
Security factors while working online
Creative ways to organise workshops (e.g., organising funding, finding attendees)
The contexts in which The Carpentries are being used (e.g., academia, labs, government, private/corporate sector, secondary schools)
Helpful tools for teaching and examples of using them in a workshop
Ethical considerations for data analysis and/or sensitive data analysis (e.g., CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance)
Bias and/or encoded racism or social assumptions in programming tools
How to run an effective online workshop/teach effectively online
Pain points in different languages and reflections on non-English-speaking workshops
More pedagogy, teaching about teaching
How to plan your workshop with diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in mind
Expanding programming lessons to include Julia, Matlab, Scala, etc.
How to develop content/lessons, particularly in a Team Science approach
Adding high performance computing (HPC) skillsets or using cloud hosting platforms (e.g., Google Cloud, AWS, Azure) for researchers
Professional development content about systems change (e.g. https://www.ashoka.org/en-gb/systems-change)
Multiple ways and opportunities for the community to connect to strengthen intra-organizational ties

Submit a Proposal

To propose a session, please use the online submission form. As an international community, we welcome sessions in languages other than English. On the form, you can also indicate which time zones you will be able to lead your session and if you would be willing to lead your session more than once. #CarpentryCon2022 will have six types of sessions:

Breakout discussions will be 1.5 hour-long and conducted in a round table or general discussion format. These discussions will play a crucial role in connecting participants based on shared interests and stimulate discussion on relevant topics.
Lesson and resource development sprints will be one-day to two-week-long collaborative efforts to co-develop lessons and resources relevant to the community. Opportunities will be provided to contribute synchronously and asynchronously to these sprints.
Lightning talks will be short, 5-minute presentations to share tips with the community (e.g., techniques to improve research and teaching, growing a local Carpentries community). These will be pre-recorded so that subtitles in multiple languages can be added and to accommodate asynchronous viewing. There will also be a time in the program dedicated to synchronous viewing and Q&A with the presenters.
Panel sessions will be 1-1.5 hour-long live discussions about a specific topic amongst a selected group of panellists who share differing perspectives. The proposal author or suggested lead will moderate and guide the panel and audience through the event. Panellists are ideally 3-4 experts in the field who will share ideas, evidence/studies, and opinions and address questions from the audience.
Skill-up workshops will be 1.5-2 hour-long sessions that provide professional development opportunities where community members share their expertise.
Social events and informal meetups will be 1-2 hour-long sessions that allow attendees to network with other community members. As determined by each session host, these sessions will range from informal discussions to playing games to virtual storytelling. We encourage creativity!

Important Information

Last date for proposal submissions will be 12 June.
We will start reviewing the submitted proposals as they are received.
Notification of accepted proposals will be sent to participants no later than 17 June.
Event registration will open 27 June; registration will be free.

Announcing CarpentryCon 2022!

As announced in October 2021, the bi-ennial CarpentryCon will be held again in 2022! The 2020 CarpentryCon was the first 100% virtual conference hosted by our organisation, and we made significant efforts to ensure the event was inclusive and accessible to any community member who wanted to participate.

CarpentryCon @ Home 2022 will again be an online event, to be held from August 1 to 12. Although the 2020 decision was made quickly and due to the travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic, our experience helped to demonstrate some of the benefits of an online event. Given the continuing pandemic, we feel the online format remains the best way for us to ensure your safety in the ongoing pandemic, but it will also help to reduce our travel budgets, reduce our carbon footprint, and broaden the potential for participation beyond an in-person event.

Task Force and Subcommittees

Planning has been underway since 2021, when we began seeking participants in the CarpentryCon planning Task Force. Task force members work closely with The Carpentries Core Team members to ensure the event meets the needs of our broader community and is inclusive and accessible.

The Task Force has organized the following subcommittees for planning and hosting the online event:

Accessibility -> develop an accessibility plan and support its implementation
Communications, Marketing and Outreach -> develop a communications plan and support its implementation
Program and Schedule -> develop a theme, list of conference tracks and relevant content (call for abstracts, etc.)
Website -> develop and maintain the conference website
